Allied Bakeries and Sainsbury's worked together to support the
FareShare One Million Meal Appeal which took place on Saturday 26th
November 2011.
FareShare is a
national UK charity supporting communities to relieve food poverty.
It aims to provide surplus 'fit for purpose' product from the food
and drinks industry to disadvantaged people in the community; it
trains and educates people around essential life skills of safe
food preparation and nutrition; and it runs the 'Eat Well Live
Well' programme which promotes the message that 'No Good Food
Should Be Wasted'.
The FareShare One Million Meal Appeal gave Sainsbury's customers
the opportunity to donate store cupboard staples, such as
tins, packets and dried foods that complement the fresh food that
FareShare receives from the food industry, making their resources
go that bit further. The food that was collected will be
redistributed to all of Fareshare's charity partners across the UK,
from Aberdeen to Brighton, from Bristol to Sunderland. It
will aim to reach the 5.8 million people who live in deep poverty
in the UK, meaning that they find it difficult to buy basic things
that many of us take for granted, including food.
The one day event was run in partnership with Sainsbury's and
Allied Bakeries in over 600 Sainsbury's stores nationwide. As
the main sponsor, Allied Bakeries provided logistical support with
over 80 employees, including CEO Mark Fairweather and Supply Chain
Director Jacquie Cahill, committing their personal time and
resources to the project. Allied Bakeries was responsible for
collecting around 300 food bins from 220 stores across the UK and
distributing them to 17 FareShare depots nationwide.
Together with Sainsbury's pledge to match customer donations,
Allied Bakeries helped deliver more than 1.2 million meals,
smashing the 1 million meal target!
