Allied Bakeries introduces 100% Recycled Packaging

4 March 2011

The first major bread manufacturer to introduce recycled packaging initiative

Allied Bakeries, top ten grocery brand Kingsmill, has announced it is introducing 100% Recycled packaging on its Kingsmill Little Big Loaf and Crusts Away range.

The packaging will be made from 100% virgin material, which means that clean off-cuts from the bread bag making process will be used to make new bags.

Guy Shepherd, Category Director, at Allied Bakeries, said: "At Kingsmill we are always looking at ways to keep waste to a minimum and encourage the industry as a whole to look at ways of reducing impact on the environment.

"By developing a way to recycle our packaging off-cuts we will save 1.4 tonnes of CO2 for every 1 tonne of recycled film made."

As part of the Kingsmill range, Little Big Loaf and Crusts Away have been specifically developed to benefit the environment and minimise waste.

A Little Big Loaf is simply a Kingsmill loaf with less slices so that smaller households can enjoy every slice without waste. Crusts Away is Kingsmill soft white bread baked in the same way but with the crusts cut off. This makes it perfect for lunchbox sandwiches and for children who don't like crusts. The crusts are not wasted though, they are sent to make breadcrumbs or animal food so every bit of the loaf is used.

The 100% recycled packaging initiative is just one part of Allied Bakeries overall commitment to the environment. Other areas of work that have already taken place include working closely with the Carbon Trust. In 2009 Allied Bakeries became the only major bread and bakery manufacturer to use the Trust's Carbon reduction label as part of its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and impact on the environment.

The carbon footprint of Allied Bakeries fleet of delivery vehicles is also being reduced with the introduction of 'teardrop' trucks, designed to be more aerodynamic than conventional trucks.

Allied Bakeries are continually looking at ways to reduce it's impact on the environment by looking carefully at all stages of the manufacturing and distribution process.
